A sad and terrible thing. [Oct. 9th, 2007|02:54 pm]
Costa Rica

The future is bleak for the country of my birth.

Costa Rica has ratified the free trade agreement.

More on the Impact of CAFTA on Costa Rica, especially on its poor: http://americas.irc-online.org/am/4575

The rich will be spared as usual.

Reports from tourists may be of a beautiful friendly paradise but to me Costa Rica is in danger of becoming a theme park. Parts of it already have. Read a bit more about this here: http://www.guardianabroad.co.uk/ngos/article/214 Its a tiny country, people. There isn't much unexplored/unexploited space.

80% of the country’s coastal property is foreign-owned. There is something terribly wrong about that. Just google property in Costa Rica and you'll see hundreds of listings. I laugh when people tell me about how they went to a part of Costa Rica "where no other American went".

This is a great article about land ownership by foreigners (sometimes well meaning yuppy hippie yoga types who think they are saving the environment): http://www.conservecostarica.org/about/biggerpicture.html

I'm sure this will be controversial, but I'm upset about this.

I agree.

One thing I will say, though, is that coastal property isn't very highly valued by Ticos, generally. Amongst other reasons, it's just not a very logical place to put a house.
